Understanding Your Chamber – Part 5
What is the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce?
Throughout our Understanding Your Chamber series, we have explored the different organizations and people working to move Troy and Miami County forward.
We have discussed advocacy, explained who does what in our community, and taken a closer look at the Troy Development Council and Troy Chamber Foundation.
Now, we are returning to the organization at the center of this series: the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce.
You may know the Chamber through a ribbon-cutting, networking event, leadership program, or community celebration. Those activities are important, but they represent only part of what the Chamber does.
At its core, the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce supports businesses, strengthens our regional economy, and helps create communities where employers and employees can succeed. While Troy is at the heart of our identity, our membership and impact extend throughout Miami County and the surrounding region.
A Membership Organization
The Troy Area Chamber of Commerce is a membership-based business organization.
Our members include businesses of different sizes and industries, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, public-sector partners, and individuals who believe in supporting a strong business community.
Businesses choose to become Chamber members. Membership is not required, and the Chamber is not a local government department.
Member investment underpins much of the Chamber’s work. Sponsorships, programs, events, and partnerships provide additional resources that allow us to serve members and address issues affecting Troy, Miami County, and the region.
While the Chamber is supported by its members, its work often produces benefits that extend throughout the broader community. Strong businesses create jobs, support local organizations, invest in community projects and contribute to the quality of life we all share
A Catalyst for Business Growth
The Chamber serves as a catalyst by helping businesses access the relationships, information, and resources they need to grow.
That can include welcoming a new business, connecting an employer with a community partner, helping a member promote its products or services, providing professional-development opportunities, or directing a business to the organization best equipped to address a particular need.
Sometimes the Chamber’s role is highly visible, such as celebrating a new business at a ribbon-cutting.
Other times, it happens quietly through a phone call, an introduction, a conversation, or a connection that helps a business overcome a challenge or pursue an opportunity.
The Chamber does not have to provide every service itself. One of its greatest strengths is knowing who can help and bringing the right people together.
A Convener of People and Ideas
Businesses do not operate in isolation.
Their success depends on workforce availability, education, housing, childcare, infrastructure, public policy, quality of life, and the overall health of the communities around them.
The Chamber serves as a convener by creating opportunities for business leaders, community organizations, educators and public officials to exchange information, build relationships and work through shared challenges.
Programs, events, committees and informal conversations give members opportunities to learn from one another and develop relationships that may lead to new customers, partnerships or community solutions.
Convening does not mean that everyone will always agree. It means creating space for productive conversations, different perspectives, and collaborative problem-solving.
A Champion for Business and Community
The Chamber champions both the business community and the broader community we share.
That includes celebrating business accomplishments, promoting local employers, and sharing the stories of the people and organizations contributing to the economic vitality and quality of life of Troy, Miami County, and the surrounding region.
The word Area in Troy Area Chamber of Commerce is meaningful. Troy’s city boundaries do not limit our work. We support businesses located throughout Miami County and the region, recognizing that employers, employees, customers, and economic opportunities move across community and county lines every day.
Championing the community also means supporting the conditions that allow businesses and people to thrive. Workforce development, education, childcare, housing, infrastructure, community leadership and quality of life all influence a company’s ability to attract employees, grow and remain successful.
The Chamber therefore has a responsibility to participate in broader community conversations and initiatives, not because we are moving away from our business mission, but because a strong community and a strong business environment are inseparable.
Being a champion also means advocating for a climate in which employers can operate, invest, and grow. The Chamber listens to its members, gathers information and communicates the business and community perspective to public officials and other partners.
Depending on the issue, the Chamber may provide education, submit comments, recommend changes, support or oppose a proposal, or encourage members and community stakeholders to become involved. This work may focus on local matters such as zoning, development regulations, or infrastructure, as well as county, state, and federal issues that affect employers, employees, and the region’s economic competitiveness.
Programs That Build Businesses and People
The Chamber carries out its work through a variety of programs, services, and initiatives.
These may include:
- Business networking and relationship-building opportunities
- Educational workshops and professional development
- Membership promotion and visibility
- Business and community advocacy
- Workforce and career-awareness initiatives
- Leadership-development programs
- Signature events and community celebrations
- Information, referrals and connections to business resources
Each program serves a different purpose, but all are connected to the Chamber’s mission to empower prosperity for Troy and Miami County.
The Chamber regularly evaluates its programs and services to ensure they remain relevant to members and responsive to changing business and community needs.
What the Chamber Does Not Do
Understanding the Chamber also requires understanding the limits of its role.
The Troy Area Chamber of Commerce is not local government.
The Chamber does not pass laws, collect taxes, approve zoning requests, issue permits, or make public development decisions. Elected officials, appointed boards, and government staff handle those responsibilities through established public processes.
The Chamber is also separate from the Troy Development Council and Troy Chamber Foundation.
The Troy Development Council focuses on economic development and business investment. The Troy Chamber Foundation supports charitable and educational initiatives, including leadership development and future workforce and community-development efforts.
The organizations collaborate because their work is connected, but each has its own purpose, responsibilities, and governance.
The Chamber can provide information, convene stakeholders, advocate for businesses and communities, and help people navigate available resources. It can influence conversations, but it does not control the decisions of government or other independent organizations.
Why Membership Matters
Every Chamber member contributes to something larger than a single event or benefit.
Membership investment supports an organization that represents the business community's collective interests, connects people with opportunities, develops leaders, and works to strengthen the economic future of Troy and the greater Miami County region.
Members also make the Chamber’s voice more effective. When the Chamber speaks on an issue, its credibility comes from the businesses and organizations it represents and the information they share.
The stronger the membership, the stronger the Chamber’s ability to serve as a catalyst, convener, and champion.
Working Together for Our Region
Strong communities require strong businesses, informed leaders, and organizations that understand their roles while working toward shared goals.
The Troy Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to help businesses throughout Troy, Miami County, and the region build relationships, navigate challenges, pursue opportunities, and participate in conversations that shape our collective future.
We cannot accomplish that work alone and we were never intended to.
Our role is to bring people together, elevate the voice of business, champion the communities we serve, and help turn connections and ideas into action.
That is what it means to be a catalyst, a convener, and a champion.
