In our last Understanding Your Chamber article, we took a closer look at the Troy Development Council and its role in supporting economic development.

This time, we are focusing on another organization closely connected to the Troy Area Chamber of Commerce: the Troy Chamber Foundation.

The Foundation is a separate charitable organization that complements the work of the Chamber. While the Chamber primarily serves and advocates for the business community, the Foundation supports educational and charitable initiatives designed to strengthen leadership, workforce readiness and the broader Troy community.

Developing Troy's Leaders

Leadership development is currently at the heart of the Foundation's work.

Its cornerstone program, Leadership Troy, has been developing informed and engaged community leaders for more than 40 years. The program brings together participants from businesses, nonprofit organizations, public institutions and other parts of the community to learn how Troy and Miami County work.

Through educational sessions, community experiences and conversations with local leaders, participants explore areas such as economic development, education, local government, healthcare, human services and quality of life.

Leadership Troy does more than introduce participants to organizations and community resources. It builds relationships, broadens perspectives and encourages participants to consider how they can use their experience and talents to help shape Troy's future.

Many Leadership Troy graduates have gone on to serve businesses, nonprofit organizations, boards, committees and community initiatives throughout the region. That lasting network is one of the program's greatest strengths.

Preparing the Next Generation

The Foundation's leadership-development work also includes Teen Leadership Troy.

Teen Leadership Troy gives local high school students an opportunity to learn more about their community, meet local leaders and explore the businesses and organizations that help Troy thrive.

The program helps students develop leadership skills while introducing them to career opportunities, civic engagement and ways they can make a difference close to home. It also helps young people see Troy not simply as the place where they are growing up, but as a community where they may choose to build a career, raise a family and become a leader.

Together, Leadership Troy and Teen Leadership Troy create a continuum of leadership development that reaches both today's community leaders and the next generation.

A Charitable Purpose

The Troy Chamber Foundation's charitable focus allows it to support programs and initiatives that provide broad educational and community benefits.

The Foundation can bring together charitable contributions, partnerships and other resources to invest in people and address long-term community needs. Its work is not limited to serving Chamber members. It is intended to create opportunities that strengthen Troy and benefit the community as a whole.

That distinction is important.

The Foundation does not replace the Chamber or duplicate its work. Instead, it provides a charitable and educational platform that complements the Chamber's business-focused mission.

Looking Ahead: Workforce and Community Development

Leadership development will remain central to the Foundation's mission, but its future role can extend further.

Businesses throughout Troy and Miami County continue to face workforce challenges, including attracting employees, preparing young people for local careers, developing emerging leaders and retaining talent in the community.

The Foundation is well positioned to help address these challenges through charitable and educational initiatives that connect businesses, schools, students, employees and community partners.

• Supporting leadership development at different stages of life and employment

The Foundation can also help address community-development needs that affect employers and their employees. Issues such as childcare, housing, transportation, education and quality of life are not solely business concerns or community concerns - they are interconnected.

The Foundation's charitable structure creates opportunities to convene partners, attract resources and support collaborative solutions in ways that complement the Chamber's advocacy, programming and member services.

Separate Roles. Shared Commitment.

The Troy Area Chamber of Commerce and Troy Chamber Foundation have different but closely aligned purposes.

The Chamber serves as a catalyst for business growth, a convener of people and ideas, and a champion for the business community.

The Foundation invests in leadership, education, workforce development and charitable initiatives that strengthen the community in which those businesses operate.

Through the more than 40-year legacy of Leadership Troy, the growing impact of Teen Leadership Troy and a future focus on workforce and community development, the Troy Chamber Foundation is helping prepare both the people and the community for what comes next.
